Frederick Douglass, speaking at Madison Square in New York, called his listeners to a "higher remembrance." Reflecting on the Civil War, he argued that it was not a battle for blood but over ideas. We are, he implored us, to recall stories and images with the former slaves at the center.
How might we answer Douglass' charge? Is it relevant today?
Should we celebrate 150 years of freedom? If so, in what manner?
